Inspirational Decking Made Easy With Ipe
If you are reading this article, than you may be looking for a new deck. If this is the case, than you must be bombarded with the different choices that are available for decking material. There are three major competitors; treated lumber, composites and hardwood lumber. They all have their pro's and con's. When weighing out the differences you will see why the choice is easy. Ipe decking has superior qualities that make it easy for you.
Treated lumber is probably the cheapest choice. The problem is it is treated with chemicals that are harmful for the environment and most importantly for you and your family. The longevity of the treated woods is about 10-15 years with annual maintenance and may be less in the harshest environments. Splintering and rot are some complaints in as little as 2-3 years. This lumber will be relatively easy to install but will require sealing and regular maintenance.
Composite lumber is somewhat mid of the line and can be very high priced depending on manufacturer and color selection. This material is a combination of plastic composites and wood fibers. This product is heavily marketed as the big corporations are spending their money on pushing that composite decking requires no sealer and will last forever. These are false statements. Composite decking has a history of problems with staining and color fading. The wood fibers that are mixed in the plastic has an environment for mold and fungus growth and some decking products have warped with the heat exposure. De-lamination has been reported in as little as 9 months after installation. Warranty will only cover the materials thus creating more labor with removal and re-installation. As for maintenance, the warranty is not valid with out regular maintenance of the decking. Sealing the deck with a preservative would be the way to insure a resistance to fungus and mold.
Now let's examine Ipe decking. Ipe wood is 3x's as hard as oak with a fire rating class A same as concrete and steel and slip resistance rated above the coefficient of friction for commercial applications. The hardwood is so dense it is resistant to mold and fungus. No worries about chemicals, Ipe is also insect and rot resistant. Ipe has been used in several commercial application due to its strength and natural beauty. Those who have environmental concerns about deforestation can rest assured that there are governmental and private organizations that monitor forests specifically for practices and procedures. The forests in Brazil where Ipe is predominantly exported from has government implemented regulations that utilize selective harvesting and responsible forestry practices with severe penalties for forest owners that do not comply. FSC certified forests are now growing at a rapid rate and requires annual audits and compliance for responsible forestry. These types of systems in place will ensure that the forests stay in place rather than get burnt down for cattle gazing and agricultural cash cropping. This also ensures that jobs remain in place for the people that need them with the natural resources that they rely on. The life expectancy of Ipe decking is average 50 years with up to 100 years with maintenance. Pricing for this deck is more than treated lumber but when faced with having to replace and re-install in as little as 10 years, this hardwood is less expensive over time.
The choice is easy when comparing the information and when you look at the difference. Decking should be installed and than enjoyed for the lifetime of the home. Put something in you know will last, has no chemicals and you can enjoy without all the maintenance requirements.

Awesome Compare Cedar Deck to Ipe Decking
When it comes to decking, both cedar decking and ipe wood are very popular choices. However, when it comes to long term sustainability, appeal, and value, nothing compares to ipe decking.
The reasons for this can be found in the hardwood themselves. Ipe lumber is denser than Cedar decking. This density is very important to take note of. Because ipe wood is extremely dense, an ipe deck will be more resistant to mold, mildew, rot and decay. On the other hand, cedar wood is much softer than ipe. To prove this, all you have to do is compare the Janka Hardness scale. Basically the Janka Hardness measures the force that is necessary to penetrate a piece of wood decking. When comparing cedar to ipe, you will find that the Janka Hardness of Cedar is significantly lower than that of ipe. This is important because your deck ages, gets used, and is subject to the elements, a cedar deck will show more wear than an ipe deck.
You should also know that cedar can show knots, imperfections, and without proper maintenance will perform poorly over time. However, ipe wood, thanks again to its extreme density look better and less worn over time. Of course, it's a good idea to use proper decking oil for the first and second year and, depending on the environment, you may be able to treat your ipe deck every other year. Cedar, on the other hand requires increased maintenance and more attention because it is softer and subject to common problems found with mediocre decking.
When you compare the look of ipe to cedar, you have to consider the future. Cedar can often turn from that welcoming and rustic red-reddish-brown to a grayish and sometimes darker look. On the contrary, ipe wood, if left untreated will age gracefully to a silver-like patina. Another reason why ipe decks are a better choice is because, when it comes to insect and decay resistance, by far, ipe is vastly superior. Mold, mildew, and insects like termites have a much easier time thriving on cedar sapwood and some less than acceptable heartwood. However, due to the natural oils and dense nature of this premium hardwood, an ipe deck more naturally resistant to those common decking problems.
Ultimately, for many people, the bottom line is important. Yes, cedar is generally cheaper than ipe. But, as the old saying goes, "You get what you pay for." Over time, the return on investment of cedar deteriorates just like the wood does. Ipe decking on the other hand has a much greater return on your investment because of less maintenance and treatments. Also, the likelihood that you'll have to significantly repair or totally replace a cedar deck is much greater than if you spent the time to invest in ipe decking.
By far, when you take into consideration the facts, ipe wood is better than cedar wood. Of course, you must always work with a professional deck builder and lumber company before you move ahead with your deck building plans. Best of luck building the deck of your dreams!

The Renovating Your Outdoor Deck
The extent of the renovation depends on the current condition and your plans for the area. Cleaning and sealing your deck are important, not just for looks but for longevity.
To know if you need to refinish your deck sprinkle the decking with clean water. If it beads up and sits there, it's fine, but if the water is absorbed, it's time to clean and seal.
Never stain or seal without cleaning first; you'll lock in dirt and stains. The job can be done by one person, but it's easier with two.
You'll need a couple of days of drying time between cleaning and sealing, as well as a few mild, dry days for the sealer to dry. Clean the entire deck, including the posts and railings.
Special cleaners help remove tough dirt, mildew and other common wood stains. A mixture of detergent and water is another cleaning option.
A mixture of one part bleach to three parts water is effective on any mold or mildew on the decking. Evaluate the wood current condition.
Make a list of the areas that need improvement due to weathering, damage, structural faults or features that don't flow well. Look for boards with cracks, rotting, gouges and other damage.
Determine if repairs are possible or if the board needs replacing completely. Complete any repairs to the boards.
First, sand rough or splintered areas, drive in loose nails or screws, and sweep thoroughly. Protect surrounding areas with tarps or plastic drop cloths.
Sand the surface using a belt sander to prepare it for staining. Use a chemical stripper if you are using a different color of stain.
Work in small areas with the chemical stripper, following all package directions closely. If your cleaner is a concentrate, mix according to package directions and take care to follow instructions regarding whether the surface should be wet or dry when applying.
Use a garden sprayer, a long-handled paint roller or a clean, stiff push broom to apply the cleaner, keeping it from forming pools. Scrub stubborn stains with the broom, and let the cleaner saturate for the recommended time.
Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose. Allow the area to dry for two days minimum before sealing.
Choose a stain that is combined with a sealer. There are plenty of sealers to choose from; broadly, they're either water- or oil-based.
Water-based sealers usually last longer and clean up more easily, while oil-based products generally keep their color better. You can choose the color and coverage you want with a stain or sealer.
A stain is a solid color that offers supreme protection. Use this if your wood has lost its beauty, if you don't care to see the grain or if you want serious color.
Semi-transparent stains offer sheer color that lets the wood grain show. Tinted water repellant has just a hint of color that offers less protection from the sun than the more pigmented choices above.
A clear sealer has no pigmentation, so protection from UV rays is minimal at best. Showcases wood, but the sun will fade the wood within a few months.
After your deck has dried completely from cleaning, apply the first of two thin coats with a long-handled paint roller or a clean garden tank sprayer. Apply thin coats of the stain, working along the entire length of each board before moving to the next.
This prevents marks at your starting and stopping points. To get an even coat, it's essential that the sealer does not pool or puddle.
Work in small sections, taking care not to paint yourself into a corner. Check the drying time on your product packaging before applying the second coat, and allow the sealant to dry thoroughly before walking on it.
Add any decorative trim or posts to the wood deck as accents, like caps on top of the posts. Install lighting for the area, which may include lights on the deck posts or lamp post style lighting.
Adorable Transforming Your Patio With Patio Umbrellas and Other Accessories
Patio umbrellas and other accessories, when well chosen, can transform your patio. Tired of watching all those home makeover shows and then looking at your own outdoor space? Give it a try yourself. A small concrete slab or plain deck is actually a common feature, especially with small homes. When you choose a few key accessories based on knowledge of how they will affect the look and feel of your patio, you can achieve similar results to what you see on TV shows or in magazines. Patio umbrellas and other similar items are the key to your makeover. A few items, if they are the right ones, can totally change the look of your patio.
They can also change the feel of your patio. Have you noticed that what you see can influence how you feel? People who work or live in disorganized surroundings often feel chaotic, too. But when they take the time to get organized, a feeling of productivity and peace comes. People who live in darkness often feel depressed, but when someone comes in and pulls up the shades, lets the sun in, and installs bright light bulbs, the feelings of depression ease a little. The same principles apply to outdoor surroundings too. Achieve a visually appealing space, and your feelings will probably improve, too.
If your patio is small, try to choose mostly light colors-for instance, white, tan, ivory, or pastel shades. You certainly don't need to suck all the color out of your patio, but make a point to avoid deep or dark colors. Darker colors make the space feel more closed in, while lighter colors make it feel bigger and more open. Use this principle as you choose all your accessories, including chair cushions, pillows, rugs, furniture frames, and patio umbrellas. You can now find many styles of patio umbrellas that allow you to choose from many canopy colors. Note the dimensions of the patio umbrellas you consider, too. They do come in different sizes. Before you buy, make sure it will fit both your patio and your dining table.
Hunt for furniture that comes with a slim frame and simple design. Like the color trick, this one helps a small patio feel more open. Slender legs, armrests, and backs may be signs that this furniture will work for your small patio.
For many homes, privacy is a big concern. Particularly if your house lies close to your neighbor's, or if it's near a busy road, you'll want to consider privacy measures. Patio umbrellas can address privacy, to a limited degree. You might also consider hedges, fences, lattice panels, partial walls, or privacy screens. To make any of structure look more appealing, you can intersperse planters with them or grow climbing vines on them. If you prefer a totally organic look, you should investigate hedges or structures you can cover completely with climbing plants.
In summary, the key to transforming your patio lies in your informed choices. Instead of picking patio umbrellas, furniture, and other accessories based on how good they look in the store, make smart choices. Think about the effect each design will have on your patio. Evaluate the simplicity of the furniture. Don't forget to consider color, too. Plan ahead to incorporate privacy enhancers in your patio makeover.

Best of How to Build a Deck
Adding a deck on to a house can add valuable outdoor and entertaining areas with the ability to extend a room. A deck can be built on to the house and integrated around trees or to surround a pool. If the ground falls away from the house it is a simple matter of lengthening the posts so that the deck is level with the house floor. There is no need to level the site or to remove trees as long as the trees are strong and healthy.
Setting out the Deck
Trees can be left be part of the design of the deck and can provide shade and cover. Many times a tree is not part of the design and a cover is to be built on top of the deck. If this is the case the posts around the deck should be installed at the full height of the pergola or awning roof. This way the posts that hold up the deck also hold up the pergola roof. Check span tables to make sure your post are strong enough to hold both the deck and the pergola roof.
Using a string line and a laser level or automatic level (dumpy level) set the height of the deck. Set the finished height of the deck level with the floor of the house or at your desired height. Mark along the house and check the level that it is completely straight and level. Then measure down to mark the bottom of the bearer. For example:
20mm Decking board
140mm joist
140mm bear
In this example you will need to measure down 300mm from the finished deck floor level mark and mark the wall again. This measurement will vary with the size of your deck and the different sized timber you need. This measure down mark is the bottom of your bearer or you can just measure down 160mm for the top of the bearer. Whatever method you use you can now start to set your bearers and posts to the correct height. Span tables will be able to show you the correct spacing for your bearers which will depend on the size and span of your deck.
Choosing your timber
Posts
If you can afford it class 1 hardwood looks the best and is the most durable or H4 treated pine. Both these timbers can be used in ground; however I believe it is always best to use hot dipped galvanised strips in ground and the timber used above ground for maximum durability.
Joists
Joists can be class 1 or 2 hardwood or H3 treated pine for above ground use. Most joists will not be seen so as long as it is durable hardwood or treated pine will not change the look of the deck.
Decking timbers
Hardwood decking timber looks the best and is the most durable. There is no need to stain the timber just coat it in water based or oil based decking sealer. Treated pine can be used and stained or painted to the desired colour however they generally do not look as good as the natural colours found in hardwood. However treated pine is cheaper than hardwood and is a valid choice for decking boards.
Decking tips
Always use hot dipped galvanised or stainless steel fixings and fittings.
If your deck is near the coast 316 stainless fitting are a must.
All decks with the floor height above 600mm must have a balustrade of 1000mm or 1 metre high.
Steps should be strong and be wide enough for two to past each other.
Before you start, check your deck with council.
Make sure you have a clear plan and drawings.
If you are building around trees leave room for them to grow.
Always check you have the correct sized timber and the deck is very strong.

Best of How Deck Boxes Improve Your Deck Furniture Life
You may have heard a lot about deck boxes during your searches for the perfect patio furniture. That being said, you may also be confused as to why you need one of these to add to your patio. How would your deck benefit from putting a box on display? What purpose will it serve? How can it change the storage paradigm for all my deck needs?
If you are not sure how a deck box can improve your life, you may want to read on. While this key piece of furniture may seem extraneous as best, a box can serve as the key storage place throughout the year. Adding a box to your patio can bring together all the storage needs, keeping them in one key place for access by all of your guests as they need. Instead of fighting and hiding all of your items, it is much easier to keep them all in one key location - sitting in your deck box. You never know when your patio items will come in handy...and when it does, you will be completely ready to answer the call.
Everybody loves having a frosty cold beverage during the long, hot days of summer. But keeping them cool can be such a hassle. And furthermore, keeping them cool can be a problem - how do we keep them cold and out of the way? Traditional ice chests are unsightly, and can get in the way, keeping guests tripping and jumping just to have a cold beverage. This is the perfect example of using a deck box, and how it can work for your deck. With all the right accessories, your box can become a cooler in no time, holding plenty of ice, and keeping your beverages of choice cold all day long. And clean-up is a snap with these boxes: just take out the liner, dump, and store for the next time your storage box needs to become the center of the party.
Many people keep chair and bench cushions for deck furnishings that come off as easy as they get tied on. This is a great touch, as it keeps chairs cool and comfy throughout the hot summer seasons. But leave them out in the heat and moisture too long, and they can start to turn dirty and hard in a hurry. Moisture, debris, and other environmental factors will degrade the quality of your cushions in no time. This is where the deck box comes in: instead of having to trudge your cushions back and forth from the garage, they can go in the box conveniently placed on your deck. Take them out with ease when your guests are here, and when they go, put them back without hassle or unneeded effort. This gives you much more time to enjoy your outdoor paradise without the worry of putting things away.
It has been said that a deck box is nothing more than an over glorified park bench, that is simply constructed better (and without a back). These key pieces of furniture are only as over glorified bench if you want it to be. Because of the sturdy construction out of the hardest woods available on the market, it can be one of the nicest benches you'll ever purchase. Why buy a bench and separate storage boxes, when you can combine comfort, aesthetic pleasure, and function in one? Adding a box will give a place for your guests to enjoy the great seasons, while giving you a great hidden storage space.
Purchasing a deck box can be one of the best investments you can make for your patio. Bringing together function with beauty will serve you well in the long run, and add a new tool for you to better enjoy your patio furniture.

About Outdoor Decorating For Life With an Herb Garden
Once you have decided to build a kitchen garden the next decision is what to put in it. Edible plants would be too obvious an answer I suppose. But what kind of plants are edible? Oh, we know, tomatoes, potatoes, fruit, peas, beans etc. That, however, is only the beginning. Have you ever added thyme to a dish? Wonder where it comes from? Thyme is an edible plant as is oregano, parsley, and coriander. Imagine having an endless supply. You can with your kitchen garden.
Most herbs are perennial plants that need six to eight hours of sunlight and well drained soil. Some are annuals and must be replanted every year. Even some annuals like rosemary and lemon verbena become annual in very cold areas of the country unless brought inside during the coldest part of the winter. One of the nicest things about herbs is that most can grow even in small areas with the help of containers.
If you have never cooked with herbs be prepared to have your taste buds awakened. You may want to start with a small herb garden. I suggest beginning with containers. The plants of choice could be one plant of thyme, tarragon, and oregano (each), two chive plants, and three or four basil plants. Note that there are many different flavors of basil. You may want to try a couple of different flavors.
Place your herbs in containers large enough for them to grow. Potting soil makes a good substrate. Place the containers in areas where they get plenty of sunlight. Use these containers for your outdoor decorating.
If you decide to plant directly into the ground be sure to work your soil first. Break up large clods and work in some organic material, about six inches into the ground. Place your herbs with the short ones - thyme and chives - in front, tarragon in the middle, and the taller plants in the back. Allow a foot between the thyme and chives and two feet between the other herbs.
Keep your new plants moist for the first week or so. Gradually allow them to acclimate to the drier weather. When weeds come up (and they will), pull them so they don't compete with the plants for water and nutrients.
As your plants mature take cuttings often. This will keep the plant full and producing new leaves. Also, fertilize basil about every six weeks. Mulching helps keep the moisture in the ground. Mulching also helps in the cold weather to protect roots.
Harvesting is simply picking a few leaves for dinner. This is best achieved when the garden is close to the kitchen. Another idea is to collect a small bunch of your herbs and place them in a glass with water. Place this on a window sill and now you don't have to go outside to get your herbs. Everything is at your finger tips.
Chamomile is a beautiful edible flower. You probably have heard of chamomile tea. Use the flower heads for herbal tea and the leaves and petals in salads. Another edible flower is chive. The flower petals are crunchy when young. Pull apart and sprinkle on your food. Lavender tea is made from the flower head of the lavender plant. This creates a relaxing feeling and is great for insomnia. Other edible flowers include saffron and savory.
Herb gardens produce wonderful seasonings for food. There is another use, however, for herbs. Herbs are essential for healthy living. Healthy living is often sought after in pill form in the pharmacy. Take a good look at those pills. You will find many of them are nothing more than herbs that can be grown in your own garden. I do suggest seek knowledge before attempting to create your own remedies. These herbs have been around for many years. Get informed.

The Is a Fireplace Ban Realistic?
In Health News the other day, it was reported that San Francisco was considering placing a ban on fireplaces. Public hearings have been held since November in the Bay Area to determine whether fireplaces are all that healthy for the home. But fireplaces have been a part of American life for years, what seems to be the problem?
Basic Questions:
Are the fires in our homes bad because they add to global warming?
Release carbon dioxide into the air?
Pollute the atmosphere with soot and particulate matter?
But, San Francisco is not the only city considering taking wood burning fireplaces out of the home. Surrounding areas such as Santa Rosa, San Jose, San Mateo and Sacramento are all taking similar actions that would stop the addition of fireplaces in newly built homes. The legislation would further require the removal of fireplaces that aren't EPA-Approved whenever a home is sold. Los Angeles County and Orange County have similar policies they are trying to push through.
Yet this doesn't make the first time we've ever heard of this. I reported on a European trend when I wrote "The Threat of Traditional Fireplaces: European Communities Lead the Way" back in February of 2007. The trend was wide spread to stop the installation of wood burning fireplaces in newly built homes. That's as far back as I can say this new way of thinking got its start. I can't find any other origin. But, that's not the issue. The issue is the future of the fireplace.
We've been enjoying them for years. Fireplaces are the hallmark of farmhouses and log cabins all across America. But, that's wide open territory. When you shove housing together in apartment buildings and townhouse units, Cul-de-sacs and suburban developments, wood burning fireplaces can become an annoyance. Not only are they an annoyance for the neighbors, but for the atmosphere.
But, the crackle of a fire after a hard day is a nice way to unwind and gain your sanity back. People don't want to give up that ambiance. The kids doing homework in front of the fireplace while the parents read a book is an American image from the Rockwell collection itself. Grandma enjoying her crochet in front of the fireplace is another setting that helps to define America.
Finding the alternative to the wood burning fireplace is the answer then. West Harbour City nestled in the Toronto waterfront has found the answer for its beautiful Canadian Condominium Projects. They purchased a ventless gel unit for each of their condominium units. They even advertise that fact as a selling point that has lead to great success for moving the units.
In the wide open territories, wood burning fireplaces can do no harm. But, most people live in the tight world of city dwelling. Alternatives should always be looked for to any pollution problem we encounter. The removal of wood burning fireplaces might be a little drastic and costly, but working toward cleaning up the world should always be an ultimate goal for the generations who will inherit the earth after us.

Best of Decking Designs The Hidden Horrors Of Composite Decking
Before we start, let me define what really is this term composite decking. It really is a mixture of 2 materials, typically wood pulp, and recycled material such as plastic bottles or plastic bags of polypropylene. Proponents of composite decking claim that this is a very environmentally friendly product as less trees are being chopped down to make way for your beautiful new wooden deck. However this notion is all wrong. Although composites are not as high maintenance as the typical wooden decking designs, cleaning composite decks requires a lot of harmful chemicals and would actually strip off the composite finish to get rid of mold. Not a very environmentally friendly way especially if it gets into your garden, is it? In some cases, physical scrubbing may even be needed to remove that stubborn black mold sitting in the middle of your deck.
Furthermore, these composite materials are always subject to mechanical wear and tear and the usual fading in decking design. While conventional wood decks can be refurbished every 5 years, your composite deck cannot be refurbished and has to be replaced. Plus, the limited lifetime warranty of most decking design companies do not cover common damage such as mechanical tear, mold growth and fading, and even if you have a legitimate claim, sometimes, labor and disposal is not covered as well. Make sure you check the warranty thoroughly before you decide to purchase composite decking designs.
Sometimes, if the composite decking design contains wood pulp, this will present another problem. Wood pulp used in composite decking design are usually leftovers from the paper industry. Thus, the wood present in your composite deck will start molding in the right conditions and unlike conventional wooden decks, the mold is not easily removed using the acidic cleaners which I have mentioned above. So much for all the claims of low maintenance by the companies, right? Okay, so if wood is really not a good option, then maybe vinyl composites are good. Virgin Vinyl is an example of a company dealing with composite decking designs. So far vinyl composites are still doing well, though, ultraviolet rays from the sun would cause some damage to them as they break down the main component in vinyl composites PVC.
Thus, with all these problems of composite decking designs it is no wonder why the best option for most of us is to stick to the conventional wood. After all, wooden decks exudes that inherent beauty and formality of a home. For now, the technology of composite decking designs is still in its infancy and the good quality ones are still out of the budget of most homeowners nowadays.

Amazing Pergolas ? The Centerpiece of Your Backyard
A pergola is a structure that could very well serve as the roof of a patio, but can also be free standing. It is a type of gazebo, but it looks rather peculiar. It's open on all sides, and most pergolas also have semi-open or lattice-patterned roofs.
A pergola is essentially an open terrace. If the name didn't give it away, it is Italian in origin, and many pergolas can be seen throughout Italy, where such outdoor structures become meeting places for friends, families and parties. When vines are trained on it, the vines can grow and climb along the pergola nicely and provide the shade that the lattice-patterned roof cannot. A row of pergolas positioned one after the other with wisteria, grapevines, or other lush, woody vines trained upon them creates a peaceful covered walkway from one place to the next.
If you so chose, a pergola can be the centerpiece of your backyard. Since there are no walls and not much of a roof either, a pergola puts you both inside and outside at the same time. You have the feeling of being indoors since there's a structure above you, but since the structure allows the elements in, it's much like being outside as well. It can define an outdoor living space without unnecessarily constraining it. Not only is a pergola very low-maintenance, but the structure also creates a very relaxing environment that is conducive for backyard entertaining. Maybe that's why they're so popular in Italy.
Building a stone walkway to your pergola adds a nice touch to your backyard as well, and it lets your guests know that the pergola is the main attraction, and that's where the entertainment is. While a pergola is an odd structure, its unique purpose—blending the inside and outside together—makes it remarkably different from an ordinary patio or even a free standing gazebo.
A pergola, while beautiful in its design, looks strange to most people, so pergola owners are usually peppered with conversation starters such as, "Where did you get that?" and "How can I get one too?" Sitting underneath a vine-covered pergola with a glass of wine can be a very calming experience.

Awesome Ipe As a Bridge Decking Solution
When people are considering building an outdoor wood bridge, the choice of wood is often paramount as the single most important decision of the entire process. The wood used will influence not only the design of the bridge, but also its aesthetic value and its reliability and durability over time. Luckily, the choice is easier than one would imagine, as ipe wood is the clear choice when it comes to bridge building material. Why is this?
Ipe is a South American wood, most commonly harvested from the forests of Brazil. Ipe is hard, tough, resilient, strong, and resists weather wear, abrasion, and naturally occurring wood rot. Ipe is incredibly dense and hard. Because of this, it is also naturally resistant to fire and mold damage. In fact, ipe is so resilient that its fire rating is equivalent to that of concrete. Compare this to a more common cedar or walnut deck that, in the case of fire, will act as kindling. An ipe bridge will just about last forever.
Ipe is also beautiful. In its appearance, it is similar to mahogany. It makes a fine interior wood when it is shined and varnished. It has that dark, blood red brown that is so desirable in finished woods. You're guaranteed to love the look of an ipe deck.
With this in mind, let's look at ipe versus some common bridge woods.
Mahogany. Although mahogany is usually a good choice for high quality bridge material, there are some significant disadvantages compared to ipe. Firstly, mahogany wood has to be treated and re-sealed every few years, and every year if you want to maintain the wood for any length of time. Ipe does not need to be sealed at all except for on the ends of the lumber and will, even if left un-treated over the life of the bridge, will out last mahogany. If you treat and seal ipe deck wood, then it will last nearly forever. Additionally, since mahogany is used as an interior wood and in the production of consumer materials like guitars, the supply has been dwindling. Because of the diminishing supply, it is very possible to get lower grade and inferior mahogany. Twenty years ago, this was not a problem, but today, a lot of the mahogany on the market is of an inferior quality.
Cedar and pine. Unfortunately, most bridges are constructed out of either cedar or treated pine. Both of these woods are susceptible to rot, particularly in wet climates or in climates that experience extremes in temperature. Pine is also a fire hazard.
Ipe is rated higher than cedar and pine in durability and resiliency, and also rated much higher in terms of appearance. If you are interested in building the best bridge possible, you should choose ipe.

Amazing Unique Gift Ideas For The Backyard Enthusiast Reduce Environmental Impact
Decorative Solar Lanterns
Inexpensive and functional, decorative solar lanterns make a beautiful addition to an outdoor dining table or sitting area. Powered by the sun's rays during the day, most high quality solar lanterns will gently illuminate their surroundings with an energy-saving LED bulb for up to 8 hours once the sun has set. No operating costs means no impact on the environment, and that is beautiful, indeed.
When preparing small gifts, such as solar lanterns, for giving, consider replacing traditional wrapping papers with cloth wrapping. Tie the cloth wrapping to the gift with a coordinating fabric ribbon. Whether you buy a pre-made cloth bag, or make one with fabric you already have handy, cloth wrapping is durable and can be used over and over again. Your friend will appreciate this additional gift.
Solar Fountains
Solar fountains for the garden, deck, or patio are another unique gift idea for the ecologically conscious outdoor enthusiast in your life. The gentle sound of running water is calming for the mind and spirit, and it can help your friend wind down and relax after hectic days. Also, a solar fountain can become the central focal point in a garden or patio without requiring a nearby electrical outlet to power the water pump.
Depending on the size of the solar fountain you plan to give as a gift, you may wish to consider no wrapping whatsoever. As an alternative, add value to the gift by putting it together beforehand, choosing a site for it outdoors, and presenting it to your loved one so that he or she can enjoy it immediately. Because there are no electrical cords with which to be concerned, the solar fountain can be relocated easily if desired.
Recycled Rope Hammock Swing
A hammock swing is not a common gift idea, but it's one that many people would love to receive. Unlike a traditional hammock, a hammock swing allows you to sit up comfortably and enjoy reading a book, having a conversation, or just taking in the surroundings. Hammock swings are often made with weather-resistant outdoor fabrics or woven with rope, but the most environmentally-friendly hammock swing is one whose ropes are made from 100% recycled polyester fibers. These ropes are extremely rugged and resist weather, moisture, and mold, but they are also soft to the touch like cotton.
While it is not recommended that you install a hammock swing gift before giving it to your loved one, you can add value to the gift by installing it yourself once a location is selected, or you can hire an installer to do the work. No wrapping is necessary for a hammock swing, but tying a decorative fabric bow around the gift before you present it can add a cheerful touch.
Gift giving doesn't have to continue to be as wasteful as it has always been. Creative wrappings that are reusable, or no wrappings, and gift choices that are sustainable as well as attractive and functional are some of the easiest ways we can make a more positive impact on the environment. By paying a little more attention to what we give and how we give it, we can make a big difference. Environmentally considerate gifts add value and joy to the giving, and to the receiving.
About Five Tips For Custom Outdoor Kitchens
First, it's important to pick a theme. After all, a kitchen is only as cohesive as the theme that is picked for it. Those that simply wing it often come up short with the finished product. Much of the point of an outdoor kitchen is to entertain people and that's why it's a good idea to select a theme before the build.
Built in grills can offer much better protection from the elements than exposed grills. A Bull Angus grill is definitely recommended when it comes to grills in general. Outdoor BBQ islands can make a fabulous addition to any kitchen. When these are built in, they are in less danger of getting ruined from harsh winds or heavy snow.
Don't forget the dishwasher. After all, those with kitchens outdoors will need to do the dishes. Rather than lugging them inside or washing them by hand outside, don't forget that there is the option for a dishwasher in the outdoors. It's highly recommended for those who are designing their own kitchen in the outdoors.
Not all appliances for the kitchen are priced the same. This is especially true for weather proof appliances. That's why anyone who is working on a project like this should be sure to price check. Compare with a minimum of two other places to ensure the prices are the best. Also, be sure to compare apples to apples which means be sure to make sure that each appliance that is being compared is the exact same make and model.
Remember the weather. It is easy to get swept up in decorations and other items that are not weather proof. This is a rooky mistake. The weather is going to wear anything out as fast as possible. That's why every aspect of an outdoor kitchen needs to be able to withstand any weather conditions. Those who are savvy about their kitchen in the outdoors are those who will be sure to select appliances that can withstand extreme weather conditions.
